Labour MP Pat McFadden faced tough questioning on whether Donald Trump can be considered a reliable ally.
During an appearance on Sky News with Sophie Ridge, McFadden was asked about the U.S. president’s reliability, following what Ridge called an “unbelievable start” to 2026. She highlighted Trump’s bold moves, including the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his controversial threats regarding Greenland.
When directly asked if Trump was a dependable partner, McFadden initially sidestepped the question, offering a more general perspective: “The UK-US alliance is extremely important. This partnership on security and intelligence keeps Britain safe every day. It’s in our national interest to work closely with the U.S., as we did recently with the seizure of a tanker in the Atlantic. The world is changing, and every government, including ours, needs to adapt. That’s why increasing defence spending and collaborating with European partners is the right approach.”
Ridge pressed again: “So, is he a reliable ally?”
This time, McFadden attempted a direct answer but stumbled slightly: “The United States is a reliable ally. We see that every day. But we also recognize the world is changing, and Europe needs to step up. President Trump has his own style, as other U.S. presidents have had. In today’s world, both hard and soft power are crucial, and the capability to use both effectively is essential.”
Sky News viewers were not impressed. One commented, “You can always tell someone is lying when they fumble their words it’s almost reflexive.” Another added, “They’re not currently a reliable ally. Militarily and in intelligence, we’re tied to them, but unless we realign with Europe, we have nowhere to go.” A third summed it up bluntly: “The U.S., a reliable ally? Hahaha. He probably feels he has to say it, but it’s time to face reality.”
