Jimmy Kimmel didn’t hold back in a scathing critique of Donald Trump during his latest show, marking the fifth anniversary of the January 6 Capitol insurrection. The late-night host launched a blistering attack just moments into the broadcast, revisiting the chaos of that day and calling out the former president’s actions in stark terms.
Opening the show, Kimmel recapped what he described as all the “crazy stuff” Trump had been up to over the holiday break, before directly targeting the Republican leader. He accused Trump of promoting a “revisionist history” and called him the most “un-American president” in modern American history. Kimmel stated, “It’s very important that we do not give in to this revisionist history. Five years ago today, we saw proof live in front of our eyes that the American president is as un-American as they come.”
The host’s remarks came shortly after the White House updated its website to claim that Democrats “staged the real insurrection by certifying a fraud-ridden election.” Kimmel slammed the move, saying, “The White House, these whitewashers, actually launched a page on the official website claiming Democrats staged the real insurrection. They even praised Trump for pardoning all the so-called ‘patriotic trespassers’ and peaceful protesters.”
Kimmel also highlighted a controversial decision regarding a plaque meant to honor the law enforcement officers who defended the Capitol on January 6. “They commissioned an official plaque for the officers, but Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House whom I call the Squeaker of the House refused to hang it. They were fine hanging it for Mike Pence, but not for the officers,” he noted.
This sharp commentary comes months after Kimmel faced his own public controversy. Earlier, his late-night show was pulled from schedules following his remarks about the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. ABC announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would be off the air “indefinitely” after Kimmel made contentious comments regarding the suspected shooter, Tyler Robinson.
The suspension lasted a week and triggered support from fellow comedians and talk show hosts, who publicly defended Kimmel. The host returned to the airwaves after the one-week suspension, resuming his commentary on politics and current events.
