Trump has once again revived the idea of the United States acquiring the territory from Denmark, a move that has alarmed European leaders. Denmark’s prime minister recently warned that any attempt by the US to take Greenland by force would effectively destroy NATO as an alliance.

In an effort to cool the situation, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed reporters in Washington. When asked whether military action had been ruled out, Rubio avoided giving a direct answer, saying discussions with Denmark were scheduled and that no further details could be shared at this stage.

Rubio confirmed that Denmark and Greenland had made a strong request for talks and acknowledged that Trump’s interest in Greenland is not a new development.

The controversy has intensified further following the US capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.
