Disgraced Peter Mandelson unleashes revenge on Starmer with huge Trump warning

UK ambassador Peter Mandelson has sounded a stark warning: Europe is losing its influence on the global stage after years of defence cutbacks.

In a rare commentary since leaving his post in Washington, Mandelson criticized the over-the-top reactions from European leaders to Donald Trump’s interest in Greenland. He described the continent as facing “growing geopolitical impotence,” increasingly sidelined in international affairs.

Writing in a new column, Mandelson praised Trump’s capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as “decisive” and argued that Europe’s own defence reductions have created openings for the U.S. to assert its influence. Despite his lifelong Europhile stance, he noted: “Europe’s diminishing global role is now undeniable. The hysteria over Greenland just underlines this harsh reality. Even now, European leaders seem unprepared for the sweeping changes shaping America’s global strategy.”

Mandelson added that Europe is distracted by headlines and social media from Washington, failing to grasp the reasoning behind American policy moves. “Instead of panicking, Europe should ask why the U.S. is recalibrating its approach and how allies can adapt to mitigate the impact while sharing strategic responsibilities,” he wrote.

He suggested that Trump is unlikely to seize Greenland militarily but expects Denmark to recognize the strategic value of U.S. involvement in the face of Chinese and Russian influence.

On NATO, Mandelson sided with Trump, criticizing EU leaders for relying too heavily on American military strength. He urged Europe to take “full military and financial responsibility, beyond mere statements.” He added, “Europe’s failure to develop hard power and credible diplomacy is being hidden behind complaints about an unorthodox U.S. president who breaks conventional rules.”

Mandelson concluded by reflecting on the shifting global order. He argued that Trump’s assertive decision-making often surpasses the indecision and bureaucratic deadlock that have marked past U.S. administrations, as well as the stalling seen in the UN and EU.

Though Mandelson’s tenure as ambassador ended amid controversy over his connections to Jeffrey Epstein, he quickly built influence in Washington and played a key role in negotiating post-tariff trade deals with the Trump administration.
