Melania Trump’s Daring Yellow Gown at Windsor Castle Sparks Debate Over Royal Dress Protocol
First Lady Melania Trump turned heads at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, September 17, as she arrived in a bold yellow gown for the state banquet but her choice of outfit quickly stirred controversy.
Melania, accompanying former President Donald Trump, was welcomed to Windsor for a royal reception attended by King Charles and Queen Camilla. While the evening celebrated diplomatic ties, much of the attention shifted to what the First Lady wore a striking Carolina Herrera gown in a vibrant shade of yellow, accentuated by a soft pink belt.
Her look was completed with turquoise dangling earrings and soft, loose curls that framed her face. While many praised her radiant appearance, others were quick to point out that her off-the-shoulder dress broke from the modest traditions often observed at royal state events.
In contrast, Catherine, Princess of Wales, opted for a full-length, hand-embroidered gold lace evening coat designed by Phillipa Lepley, worn over a silk crepe gown an elegant and conservative look typical of royal protocol. Queen Camilla chose a floor-length royal blue Fiona Clare gown, adorned with her signature sapphire and diamond tiara and a matching necklace.
Even though all three women wore formal evening gowns, Melania’s off-the-shoulder cut drew the most attention. The hint of bare shoulders was viewed by some as “inappropriate” for a royal banquet, where the dress code traditionally leans toward conservative styles.
Fashion etiquette expert Lucy Hume, who has discussed royal fashion rules on The Royal Family Channel and in The Independent, has previously explained that guests are expected to follow strict dress codes when attending royal functions. She cited the Royal Ascot’s formalwear rules as an example, noting that women are required to wear dresses “below the knee with covered shoulders” in the royal enclosure.
Critics online echoed similar sentiments after seeing photos of Melania at Windsor. On the Royal Family’s official Instagram post featuring King Charles, Queen Camilla, Donald Trump, and Melania posing together, several users commented on the First Lady’s fashion choice. One wrote, “Isn’t it against royal protocol to wear off-the-shoulder at a state function?” Another added, “That dress is so inappropriate for the occasion.”
Despite the criticism, many admired Melania’s fearless fashion statement. Supporters praised her for bringing a pop of color and elegance to the event. One admirer commented, “She looks stunning the color is bold, and she stands out beautifully.”
Some even suggested her color choice was intentional and strategic. “Melania hit the nail on the head,” one observer noted. “Yellow sits opposite blue on the color wheel her gown was the perfect contrast to Queen Camilla’s blue dress, making her stand out even more.”
Whether it was a deliberate fashion move or simply a reflection of her personal style, Melania Trump once again proved that she knows how to make a statement. Her bright yellow Carolina Herrera gown may have sparked debate, but it also reminded the world of her signature confidence and flair for high fashion.
