A recent video of Donald Trump and Melania Trump on the South Lawn has gone viral, showing a tense exchange between the former President and First Lady. Now, lip-reading experts have offered insight into what was said during the heated interaction.
The footage, captured as the couple prepared to board Marine One on Wednesday night, shows Trump pointing and gesturing at Melania while she shakes her head. The moment quickly circulated on social media, drawing comparisons to the viral clip of French First Lady Brigitte Macron nudging President Emmanuel Macron in May.
Jeremy Freeman, a professional lip reader, analyzed the video and shared his interpretation with the Daily Mail. According to Freeman, the exchange was related to the so-called "escalator-gate" incident at the United Nations General Assembly earlier this week, rather than a personal disagreement between the couple.
Freeman suggests that Melania began by saying, "You just continued…" to which Trump replied, "It was unbelievable." Melania then responded, "Just say it and leave it," prompting Trump to express surprise with, "How can you do that…" Despite the intense discussion, the couple appeared reconciled shortly afterward, exiting the helicopter and holding hands as they crossed the lawn.
The escalator incident at the UN drew public attention when the steps malfunctioned during Trump’s arrival. The former President later posted on Truth Social, noting: "It's amazing that Melania and I didn't fall forward onto the sharp edges of these steel steps, face first. It was only because we were each holding the handrail tightly or, it would have been a disaster."
This episode recalls the viral moment involving Brigitte Macron playfully slapping her husband aboard an aircraft earlier this year. When Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy asked Trump if he had any advice for world leaders navigating similar moments in their marriages, he quipped, "Make sure the door remains closed. That was not good. I spoke to him. He's fine. They're fine. They're two really good people. I know him very well."
The timing of this exchange comes amid heightened scrutiny of Trump’s UN visit. The White House recently revealed that the Secret Service is investigating claims of "sabotage" by UN staffers during the President’s visit. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News that UN personnel were reportedly "basically plotting to set up" Trump, and that the audio inside the room differed significantly for him compared to other speakers.
The South Lawn incident offers a rare glimpse into the private dynamics of one of the world’s most scrutinized couples. While the discussion appears tense, the public display of hand-holding afterward suggests a return to composure. Meanwhile, social media users and political commentators continue to analyze the clip, comparing it to other viral moments involving world leaders and their spouses.
This viral moment highlights not only the intense public interest in Trump and Melania’s interactions but also the unusual intersections of politics, personal relationships, and global media attention.
